Two more goals from Lionel Messi gave Argentina a 2–0 win over Austria and a place in the knockout rounds with a match to spare.
Messi missed an early penalty, then scored in the 38th minute from a Facundo Medina cross and again in added time. The goals took him past Miroslav Klose as the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer, with 18.
The crowd was 70,649. A midday kick-off in Texas made this the hardest one to watch from here: 3:00 am on Tuesday in Sydney and Melbourne, 1:00 am in Perth and 5:00 am in New Zealand.
